Chapter Ten
Caught in a vice between freezing and scalding, Mike shifted uncomfortably, crawling sluggishly from the land of sleep into the real world of awakening. His sleep was shallow and fitful, a restless grasp of snatches of shut eye intermingled with cold chills and a deep, radiant heat. Theyâd taken shelter in the walk-in freezer that hadnât had power since the lights went out a week ago, and by all rights, it shouldnât have made him cold, but somehow it still did.
The chill was locked in fearsome combat with the heat, and as he awoke, the heat was winning, his forehead glistening with a damp sweat. He lifted himself to a seated posture and looked around the small chamber, seeing Drake still curled in a fetal position in a far corner, wedged between two racks of now-spoiled food.
Ruth was already awake, kneeling by the freezer door, her ear pressed to the smooth, metal surface, eyes half-closed as she struggled to focus.
âWhatâs going on?â Mike asked. Using a shelf, he pulled himself to his feet, bracing himself for the sharp, stabbing pain in his leg, but being surprised that it was more like a dull ache. Muscle soreness more than torn flesh and ragged muscle. Even his shoulder felt a little better.
âJust listening,â Ruth replied. âSeeing if anything is moving out there.â Mike checked his wrist, but saw it was bare. Had he lost his watch somewhere along the way? His eyes scanned the walls of the freezer, and sure enough there was a round clock on the far wall, a device mostly meant to be a temperature gauge, but it also had the time displayed, too.
âAlmost 6:45,â Mike said, almost not believing how late it was. He hadnât slept thoroughly, but heâd slept a long time, longer than he had any night since the blackout.
âThatâs morning,â Ruth replied. âWe should be clear.â
âThat a chance you want to take?â
âWe canât sit in here all day,â she replied.
Mike nodded, making his way to his backpack and the rifle sitting on the floor near it. Carefully lifting the M4A1, he removed the magazine to investigate.
âHey, thatâs mine.â
âIf I remember right, Iâm the one who stole it originally,â Mike retorted. âBesides, Iâm a better shot, anyway.â
âSo, did I dream the fact that I pulled your sorry butt out of one of those beastieâs mouths last night? Was that my imagination?â
âYeah, you know, I think it might have been.â
âWhatever,â Ruth said, shaking her head. Mike pressed the stock of the rifle to his shoulder.
âJust open the dumb door.â
Ruth held up a single finger and wrapped her hand around the handle. She thrust the handle down and extended a second finger. Then she threw out her third finger and shoved forward, using her shoulder to heave the freezer door open, bursting out into the back room. Mike jolted from the freezer, through the opened doorway, weapon elevated, shifting left and right, covering the entire room. There were two dead slicks sprawled on the floor, but the
